Kirkfield, Ontario, Canada Situated in the Kawartha Lakes area, Kirkfield offers a wide range of activities to enjoy year round. Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada Located in the heart of the 30,000 Islands of Georgian Bay and close to 1,000 inland lakes, this resort town offers fishing year-round, a variety of watersports in summer and, in winter, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Espanola, Ontario, Canada The largest centre in the Manitoulin area, just north of the island, Espanola has a large pulp mill and a great deal of beautiful scenery. Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada Sault Ste. Marie, also called the Sault (pronounced Soo) , is an international city of 81,000 people located at the heart of the Great Lakes on the border with Michigan. This modern city is surrounded by rich forests, freshwater and natural beauty. Harbor Springs, Michigan, USA Harbor Springs is a thriving little community nestled among the rolling hills on the shore of Lake Michigan and the Little Traverse Bay. With a natural harbor and plenty of docking slips near the downtown area, this is a favorite stop of those sailing the waters of Lake Michigan. Incorporated as a village in 1881 and as a city in 1932, Harbor Springs is rich in its history, from the Ottawa Indians who first lived here to the Jesuit Mission established here in 1742, and a frequent stop of the trading ships using the Great Lakes waterway. Oscoda, Michigan, USA Oscoda and Oscoda Charter Township are located in eastern Iosco County on the beautiful shores of Lake Huron. This area was first settled in the late 1860's when Edward Smith of the company of Smith, Kelly & Dwight bought land here. First called Au Sable, the name of this town was later changed to Oscoda due to the influence of the writings of Henry Schoolcraft, who named it after the Indian words "ossin" and "muscoda," meaning "pebbly prairie." Situated at the mouth of the Au Sable River, this town played a major role in the lumber era as a key distribution point for shipping lumber on the great lakes. Later in the mid 1900's, Oscoda played a major role as host to the Air Force with the location of Wurtsmith Air Force Base just to the west of town, until it closed a few years ago. Port Austin, Michigan, USA P.C. Austin, part owner in a sawmill here in 1839, built a boat dock for himself. When he enlarged it for the use of others, he put a street light on a pole for a lighthouse and it became known as Austin's Dock, later as Austin Port, and finally as Port Austin. Port Austin is at the very tip of Michigan's Thumb. Here the sun rises and sets on the water and the shoreline has uniquely formed rocks which add to the picturesque views. The village of Port Austin boasts many resorts and motels for the vacationers. There are several parks in the area offering a variety of recreational activities. The Pinnebog river runs through Port Crescent State Park and is perfect for canoeing and local charter boat captains offer a variety of fishing excursions. Port Huron, Michigan, USA Port Huron, located in Saint Clair County, is one of the oldest settlements in the state of Michigan. In 1686, the French built Fort St. Joseph to guard against possible British incursions into their fur trade. Port Huron has a restored historic central business district, the more modern Birchwood Mall and many of the major retail and restaurant chains. It also provides 550 boat slips for transient boaters, the largest marina facility operated by a city in Michigan. The annual Blue Water Festival takes place in mid-July, culminated by the Port Huron-Mackinac Yacht Race. St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada The largest municipality in Elgin County, St. Thomas has a railway history and many examples of Victorian architecture. There is a life-size statue of JUMBO the elephant, who died here. Numerous parks dot the area. Toronto, Ontario, Canada The heart of the city is home to the CN Tower (the world's tallest free-standing structure), the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
