Indian Lake, New York, USA It is the least-populated county in the Adirondack Park, and the largest. It has one million acres of unbroken wilderness. Two hundred sixty-two lakes and ponds. Five hundred miles of groomed cross country trails. You don't end up in Hamilton County by accident. Directly in the middle of the Adirondack Park, the largest park in the continental United States - bigger than Yellowstone and Yosemite combined - Hamilton County represents a different way of life. There are no Gap outlets here. No long lift lines at the downhill ski centers. You can roar through the 750 miles of groomed snowmobile trails all day without hitting a town. It is one of the wildest areas in the country. Its residents - less than three per square mile - are here because they're drawn here. Maybe for the same reason you're drawn here: because it's one of the last places in America where the wild still rules. Syracuse, New York, USA A lively but largely unattractive modern city, busy Syracuse made its name first for the production of salt and, more importantly, for its central position on the Erie Canal. Despite a population nudging half a million, there's little to see, though the presence of Syracuse University gives downtown an active and youthful feel. The redevelopment of Armory Square, around Franklin and Fayette streets, as an area of specialty shops, galleries and cafes has gone some way towards adding character to the city center, but the city still feels dominated by the highways and railroads that slice through it. Tobermory, Ontario, Canada A "picture postcard" village of great charm at the tip of the Bruce Peninsula, the northern terminus of the Bruce Trail, and the southern terminus for the Chi-Cheemaun ferry to Manitoulin Island. With its frame houses and twin harbours, the atmosphere of a quiet fishing village prevails, though in fact it's a busy resort and a centre for underwater activities and the port for cruises to Flowerpot Island in Fathom Five National Marine Park. Naturalists are attracted to the Tobermory area to look for the 40 species of orchid found here. The spectacular scenery along the Bruce Trail attracts many hiking enthusiasts, and the Bruce Peninsula National Park is a popular camping area.
